Successful Season Finale at Staffordshire
The sealed tarmacadam event based around the active army barracks at Swynnerton, Staffordshire hosted 10 stages, amounting to over 70 challenging stage miles. The entry boasted a number of WRC cars and the eventual winner, a Metro 6R4.
With the event being the first ever stage rally use of the venue, all competitors were apprehensive as to the conditions, and stage one was used to acclimatise to the nature of the venue. It proved to be smooth and fast tarmacadam with some challenging calls on the Navigational notes. With 80 starters, the crew were pleased to set a top 50 stage time on the first run.
The crew were saddened to be one of the first cars on the scene at stage three where a serious accident required the Air Ambulance and cutting gear to release the navigator form the car. The stage was cancelled and this led to delays in the day’s proceedings, however, the organising club acted swiftly to minimise those delays.
The afternoon run of stages saw the car perform impeccably, setting consistent stage times without taking too many risks, potentially causing damage or mechanical failure. The flowing nature of the stages allowed for speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, which proved demanding on both driver and navigator.
The eventual result, after 9 challenging stages was a pleasing 37th overall. This rounded off the season with a 100% finishing record. Team Rallycards will now use the winter break to programme a schedule of events for the 2010 Season.
